SECURITY ON PUBLIC WIFI
Having your own hotspot is unparalleled, but it can be costly. If that isn’t an option for you, there are other ways to stay connected while driving. While using public WiFi can be convenient, it is not always the most secure option.
There are a few things you can do to protect yourself while using open networks so that free WiFi doesn’t come back to bite you.
1. Never enter sensitive personal or financial information while using a public network.
It exposes you to savvy criminals who can commit credit card fraud or, worse, identity theft. If you enjoy online shopping, limit it to secure networks such as those at home or work.
2. When possible, use secure websites.
Many websites will do this for you, ensuring that you are always on a secure connection, but double-check the URL.
3. Implement two-factor authentication on frequently visited websites.
This additional layer of security (such as the addition of a phone number) makes it less likely that even a password-protected site will be hacked.
4. Don’t forget to forget
When you’re done with the network, forget about it. If you don’t, it will connect automatically the next time you are in range, leaving you vulnerable to a cyber attack. By deselecting “Connect Automatically” in your settings, you can prevent your smartphone from doing this automatically.
These few tips can help you stay safe while using free WiFi and protect yourself from identity theft and credit card fraud.
FAQs
Is there a free WiFi hotspot?
There are no unlimited mobile hotspot device plans (you read that correctly—you’ll need to use a cell phone plan, as we mentioned earlier, if you want unlimited data). The amount of data you can use is limited in all data-only hotspot plans.
Who has a hotspot plan that is unlimited?
Unlimited data plans for hotspots are available from Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T. However, there is a major catch: each provider limits the amount of high-speed data you can use on a hotspot device. Typically, you’ll receive 15-30 GB of high-speed data.
How much does 100GB of hotspot cost?
T-Mobile Mobile’s Internet 100GB for $50 per month postpaid data plan for hotspots, tablets, and routers has been reinstated! This plan is only available through customer service representatives via phone, chat, or in-store – not online.
